We are Al and Renae Scheiderer. We met in May of 2000, and were married October 1, 2000. We met through the magazine called Hoard's Dairyman. Al put an ad out, and I answered. Very unusual way of meeting, but it has worked for us. Going to the State Jersey Sale at the Wayne Co. Fairgrounds in Wooster, Ohio was our second date on Memorial Day. After getting married, I moved from my hometown of Bremen, Ohio located in central Ohio to Al's hometown of Beallsville, Ohio located in Monroe Co. in Southeast Ohio.
In December 2003, Al and I decided to pick up the option to buy the farm, known as Buckeye Grove Farm, from his parents, Jake and Dixie Scheiderer. We take care of the everyday chores, milking, feeding, making hay, etc. Jake and Dixie Scheiderer then started the cheese making facility on our farm known as Buckeye Grove Farm Cheese, LLC, using milk from our herd and their eight remaining milk cows. Jake and Dixie are the original founders and creators of The Ohio Farmstead - Artisan Cheese Guild. Both, Al and Renae are executive board members of the guild, Al as secretary and Renae as treasurer.
Al has been around the dairy farm all of his life. Al has shown dairy cattle for 27 years. He started milking full time when he was 10, graduated from Christian Light Homeschool, and The Ohio State University - ATI with an associate degree in dairy science. While attending OSU-ATI, he traveled to England and the Isle of Jersey where he worked his internship and became a Life Member with the World Jersey Cattle Bureau. He was sponsored by Merlin Woodruff, Steve Andrews, Frederick Farms, Brewster Dairy, Max Spann and the late, Dr. Fred Claugus DVM(who was also the best man at our wedding). While there he presented trophies to young showmen in the names of his sponsors. The trophies he presented were his own which he earned in showmanship during his 4-H experience. Upon graduation, Al became a Life Member with the OSU Alumni Association. In June of 1990, Al purchased all but twenty head of cattle and all of the farm machinery and milking equipment from his father, Jake.
I graduated from Fairfield Union High School in 1995. Went to work at a local dept. store in Lancaster, OH called Lancaster Sales. I worked there for 5 years, from cashier to office. Growing up, I was involved in 4-H for several years, taking various projects from sewing to showing rabbits. I took several business classes in high school, which have come in handy here on the farm. I was raised around every animal imaginable. We raised goats, pigs, rabbits, I had a horse for several years, and we did have a handful of dairy cows, every breed.
In November of 2007, Jake and Dixie moved on to Kentucky, taking along their last three remaining bred heifers where they are planning on making pies and milking a few Jersey cows.
In November of 2007, Al and I (Renae), became licensed cheese makers and started making cheese. In January of 2008 we acquired the rights to own and operate Buckeye Grove Farm Cheese, LLC . We look forward to making cheese again in mid to late March. We will be learning a lot as we go!
