We are proud to acknowledge DVM Fred Claugus for all his years of hard work and enthusiasm. Thank you to all the
veterinarians at Barnesville Veterinary Service,112 N Chestnut St, Barnesville, OH 43713, phone: (740) 425-2218.

We are humbled and honored to reprint the following from the Monroe County Beacon Volume 161, Number 37,
Thursday December 15 '05.

Monroe County Beacon: page one:

"A well respected Barnesville veterinarian has lost his life doing the work he loved to do.  Dr. Fred C. Claugus, 53,
was tending a cow..." "...when he became entangled in a rope which pinned him to a post.  According to Monroe
County Sheriff Tim Price, the cow was tied to a wooden post and the veterinarian became pinned to the post when the
rope wapped twice around his abdomen." The cow's owner "untied the cow and took it out of the barn. He reported
that Dr. Claugus said he'd be okay. However, the veterinarian collapsed."  The cow's owner "left the barn and flagged
down the first passing motorist..." "...who called for emergency personnel.  According to Dr. Jay Seidler, county
coroner, an autopsy report revealed multiple rib fractures on both sides and a lacerated aorta in two places.  Seidler
pronounced Claugus dead at the scene.  Claugus was one of two men chosen this year as the Beacon's Men About
Town.  He began his walk as a veterinarian literally in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Fred Claugus, Sr. At the age of
eight, Freddy, as the older farmers called him, began answering farm calls with his father - he never stopped.  When
asked in an interview earlier this year, Claugus said he could not imagine doing anything else. 'He gets up in the
morning as excited about his practice as the day he started,' wrote the reporter. 'If he could change one thing, it would
probably be going back to a simpler time when bartering for services was the norm.'  An 80 hour work week was not
uncommon for Dr. Claugus. In addition to the passion he held for his job, he was passionate about helping young
people pursue an education, especially in the veterinary field. e served on the Education Committee for a number of
years and his letters of recommendation were valuable o several area students heading for veterinary school.  When
field trips to the veterinarian's office were held for grade school students, each child was given individual attention. If
they were curious about anything, Dr. Claugus, in his enthusiasm to share what he knew, answered every question.
Claugus was a 1970 graduate of Barnesville High School and a 1977 graduate of The Ohio State University School of
Veterinary Medicine.  He was owner of the Barnesville Veterinary Services in Barnesville and Woodsfield.  He is
survived by his wife, Jean Ann and four children."
